The Navigation Work Cycle

The navigation work cycle is a way to manage your time in the cockpit. It is set out below:

  1. Take the fix and alter heading.
  2. Amend ETAs.
  3. Put away the map - look out and fly accurately.
  4. Identify next fix on map.
  5. Identify fix on ground.
  6. Assess error, change to closing angle and new heading.

Medium Level Cockpit Checks

Before the turning point we do:
  • Heading - map to compass
  • Altitude
  • Time - clock set
After the turning point we do:
  • Heading - compass to map
  • Altitude
  • Time - clock running
  • Fuel - consumption and sufficient
  • Instruments - erect and aligned
  • Radios - tuned
  • Altimeter - pressure setting
  • Demist - can I see out
